One component essential to running most businesses online is showing up online. That can be on social media, websites and platforms or in online groups. You know that showing up is part of reaching and attracting new clients but there are a number of obstacles and barriers that block our visibility. These thoughts, fears and unhelpful questions hold us back from connecting, promoting and showing up online. These are obstacles to visibility. Obstacles to growing our business, growing our audience and helping clients.
Consistency is one factor that holds us back from showing up. Or really I should say consistency is one excuse, one thought, we allow to hold us back from being visible.
What is consistency?
According to Oxford Languages “the quality of achieving a level of performance which does not vary greatly in quality over time.”
Firstly it’s important to remember that consistency does not equal daily. You do not need to be posting on your Facebook page (or groups) every single day in order to be consistent.
Consistent could be once a month, admittedly that probably won’t do you any favours with the algorithm or being remembered by your audience but it could be defined as consistent, reliable and dependable. For example if you ALWAYS post on the 1st day or the 1st Monday of the month.
Because thinking you need to show up every single damn day on your marketing platform of choice is a HUGE obstacle to visibility.
So many people think they need to go from zero posts, zero consistency to daily, even multiple times a day. A recipe for overwhelm for most solopreneurs and a recipe for burnout for introverts.
How can you achieve that ‘requirement’ to be consistent?
Start slowly
Two or three posts a week can be enough. Pick one or two key themes for your channel (or use the theme days in the groups) and create a bunch of posts around that. Then you can schedule them in to go out over the course of the next few weeks. Eight posts could give you a month’s worth of consistency. You can then show up spontaneously in between those scheduled posts and increase your total. But if you run out of energy or time or inclination then those posts will keep you going. They are your insurance policy.
Allow yourself to change
Accept that dropping off the internet is a possibility. It is not a requirement to keep going forever once you get started. You don’t have to maintain 7 posts a week if that’s what you’ve been doing. You don’t always have to entertain, inspire, educate, connect, ask questions and promote. What works is going to change and you’re only going to figure out your optimal content and your optimal schedule by experimenting! Plus you are going to fail, but it can be a good thing.
Emergency content
Another great insurance policy is to create a reserve content bank, for the times when life gets hectic. These posts can be quickly popped up to help maintain that consistency. Collect relevant memes, reshare posts that have done well, brainstorm fun and easy questions to engage your audience. Batching ideas can take away the dreaded, ‘what am I going to post today?’ question, from every single day. It’s the business owner equivalent of ‘what’s for dinner?’! Just start with a couple and pop them into the draft mode in your scheduler.
