Avoiding Your Money – Sign Two

Through December and January we are looking at some of the signs that show up when you’re avoiding your money. If you want my  tips on addressing some of the signs then head over to bit.ly/wa7Signs and register for the email series.

The second most obvious sign you are avoiding your money is not having a handle on your financial situation.

Just like chaos this sign comes in multiple layers.

Starting with

You might start by guessing rather than knowing what your bank account or credit card balances are. It doesn’t need to be to the cent perfect but if you don’t even have a general idea that’s not exactly financially in charge.

Moving onto

Through to just presuming that there will be enough money. Whether in your account or on your credit card to cover that new course, or the rent. Or that you’ll have enough in three months for your fifth AfterPay purchase this month.

Maybe you don’t know how much you need to support your current lifestyle. What does it cost to run your life on a weekly or month basis – yep that’s a budget. What about the lifestyle you want with a wine membership, monthly spa trips with the girls and an annual trip to that amazing business conference?

Ultimately

Not having any handle on your overall financial situation disempowers your relationship with money. You think things like net worth don’t apply to you, never mind how you might go about actually working it out.

Now don’t think that I’m perfect and have always had a handle on all of these. You could have visibly measured my shame when after university before getting a job I went over my overdraft by a few quid and paid some hefty penalties.

Remember we make it harder because then we can use that as a reason not to deal with it.

What could you do this week to streamline and make your finance life easier?
