Money and Success

Many, many times I have heard clients and other business owners say “it’s not about the money”. Money isn’t important to them. They just want to help people. Like money and success aren’t even related.

But I have a controversial opinion > Money Equals Success. That may initially appear shallow and money-obsessed but don’t dismiss me out of hand, instead let me explain and let me challenge your money mindset.

Money

When I say money I’m talking about profit for business owners. There’s no point making a load of money to spend it all and still not be able to enjoy a comfortable lifestyle.

Success

For me, success is being able to live the life I desire and dream about. One that is congruent to my values. Where I can spend time doing the things I enjoy. And where I can channel resources to causes I believe in.

Money Equals Success

I don’t believe that money is more important than everything else but money is an enabler. And I don’t believe that money is the only thing that comes into success.

But if you take money away are you able to spend your time as you please? Are you free to volunteer time or donate to charity? Are you able to support businesses or causes you believe in when you barely have enough to cover rent, bills and essentials? [Unless utility companies and supermarkets are your favourite causes].

Without money, you can’t build a legacy of being able to help hundreds, thousands or millions of people because in today’s internet, information age, it’s difficult to reach people’s micro-second attention span. Even if that help is free.

What’s Your Success?

This is a really important question because there isn’t one version of success. Success is not an arbitrary number or ‘thing’. It’s not $10m in the bank, or having 10 people in your team, or working 10 hours a week. Though for you maybe that is exactly what success would be. It’s what the $10m in the bank would enable that is really your definition of success.

I’m going to guess that most definitions of success require money to enable them.

An off-grid cabin in the woods with a vegetable garden? Who is paying for the cabin, the land, the solar panels, the water and wastewater system, the maintenance, the axe to chop firewood and the spade to plant seeds? And the things you can’t grow?

I challenge you to tell me a version of success that doesn’t require cash to establish and or maintain it that’s a full life.

Money Enables Success

My opinion in its essence is probably that money is an enabler of living out your dreams. There are many things that simply don’t work without money, even if you are a fan of trading and swapping.

The added benefit is I also find that when business owners accept that money and finance are an essential part of their business. Because if you aren’t intending to make any money you actually have a hobby. That business gets more serious. In a good way. Enjoyment of your business is important, that’s probably a success factor we all share. But commercial viability and feeling valued is also important. I doubt most people would enjoy spending 30-40 hours a week doing work that pays less than minimum wage.

What do you need to do to accept money as a foundation of your business and a part of your success story?
