Good Money Management Signs

Over the last seven weeks we’ve covered the most common signs that you are avoiding dealing with your money. If you want the video summary and my tips on addressing some of the signs then head over to bit.ly/wa7signs and register for the email series.

We are seriously complicated creatures that do seemingly silly things like making our lives harder so we have a reason not to deal with something.

  • Can’t remember your banking log-on – well then I’ll not be able to check my account…
  • Don’t know what your lifestyle costs – well then I’ll just keep spending until there’s nothing left
  • Want to avoid finance and feel productive – well I’ll just empty the dishwasher and put another load of laundry on.

Why do we make it harder? Because then we can use that as a reason not to deal with it. But you don’t have to continue this way. Pretty much everything was hard when we first tried. Good money management skills are something you can learn and are skills that will help you right through your lifetime.

Good Money Management

Let’s outline what good money management looks, sounds and feels like.

  • everything money and finance is organised. No more chaos. No more not knowing. And it’s goes beyond simply being organised, this gives you a sense of certainty and control. Not everything is always going to be perfect and exact but we also know what needs our attention.
  • you know what needs to be done and when and, if you need it, you have some accountability in place to make sure that happens. Maybe working with someone for structured accountability, money dates with your partner, checklists if you love getting all the boxes ticked or check-ins with business buddies.
  • you know your numbers, this isn’t necessarily tracking every cent. But you know what your lifestyle costs, savings goals, splurges and contingencies. You have a plan, some would call it a budget, and you use it as a tool for financial freedom.
  • you’re supported by systems, tools, habits and/or routines that help you. Where possible things are streamlined and automated. But more importantly you understand, recognise and acknowledge the importance of your finances and money management and the power of being in charge of your numbers.
